Once again, thank you for your continued thoughts and prayers for our new little family. We truly appreciate everyone’s concern and offers to help. We’ll hold you to those offers as soon as Ainsley gets home!
Here’s the latest on Ainsley: For the most part, everything is unchanged. Ainsley is still requiring oxygen, which is the biggest factor keeping her here at the hospital. She’s been steady on around 40% oxygen and she needs to get down to 21% (normal room air oxygen percentage). The doctors will continue to try to wean her lower, but it’s up to her on how far down she can go. Her oxygen saturation needs to stay above 92% so they won’t lower the oxygen percentage to anything that makes that saturation unattainable. Once she gets off oxygen she’ll still need to stay here for about two days in order to confirm that she’s doing fine.
She’s still breathing fairly rapidly to compensate for the fact that her lungs aren’t absorbing all the oxygen she needs. But her breathing isn’t difficult or labored at all, just fast. She’s still on antibiotics and the doctors say they will most likely keep her on antibiotics until she gets off oxygen. They are still confident that she’ll recover completely and they say sometimes it just takes a little longer. Their estimate for taking her home is now this next Sunday or Monday (26th or 27th). They remind us that she’s only six days old and that we don’t need to rush things. They also say there shouldn’t be any long term effects from this stay in the NICU.
She’s eating really well and is gaining weight (she’s back above her birth weight). Her face is getting more and more expressive by the day and we have such a good time hanging out with her. We just wish she could be home with us.
On another note, Johanna and I are doing pretty well. We’ve settled into a rhythm of spending all day at the NICU, but taking an afternoon break. It’s exhausting being at the hospital all the time (so many other babies, parents, noises, etc.) but we’re getting used to it. Also, the nurses here have been fantastic and that makes it so much easier to be here.
Johanna gets around really well for a lady who gave birth less than a week ago, but she pushes herself a bit too much sometimes. Also, as you might imagine, the chairs in the NICU aren’t that great for recovering from birth. Johanna’s mom, Linda, has been a great help and we’re very thankful that she’s here.
That’s all I have for now; I’ll update everyone as things get better. I’ve loaded some more pictures of Ainsley and us….
