Other December Happenings

One fun/memorable thing that we did this Christmas season was make Christmas cookies.  We pretty much do this every year but this year we thought it would be nice to make them and then hand them out to the workers at the land building our new house.  The kids jumped right on board with this plan!  Here they are working hard at stamping out cookies.  I'll admit that it was a little hectic rolling out the dough, keeping them from stamping their cookie out of the middle, helping them pick up their cookie to put on the cookie sheet, re-rolling out the dough, getting the cookies in the oven, trying not to burn them etc. all while keeping Caroline entertained and happy.  It was all fun but after these first few pictures, I gave up on trying to capture the moments in an effort to just have fun with the kids instead.  But this gives you the gist.

After they stamped the cookies, I let them decorate them with milk and sprinkles and fun holiday candy shapes.  This made a huge mess but the kids would probably say that it was the most fun part.  I wish I had gotten a picture of how the cookies turned out because they were NOT pretty!  They looked very kid-made and hilarious but the kids were really proud of them and they were yummy!  After the cookies cooled we divided them into individual bags.  Ainsley spent a few of her rest times coloring pictures and cards that we attached to each bag.  All in all they turned out really sweet.

Once all of our cookie bundles were done, we went out to the land to hand them out to everyone.  It warmed my heart seeing how eager the kids were to thank all the workers and to share the cookies that they made.  Naturally Ainsley was bounding all over the place greeting everyone and distributing cookies.  Bailey was a getting sick and a little more fragile that afternoon than normal and he was feeling sort of shy.  Still, he went up and gave one of his bags of cookies to Pedro who is the mason working on the stone on the exterior of the house.  Afterwards as we were getting ready to leave, Pedro came up to me and said in broken english that he would keep the card that Bailey gave him for his whole life because Bailey had made it with his heart.  I was touched that the kid's actions meant so much to him and thankful that we had taken the time to spread some Christmas joy especially to these men who are working so hard to make our new house beautiful.

Another December event was mine and George's 9th anniversary on December 16th.  Sadly our anniversary often gets overlooked or postponed because of how it falls in the craziest part of December.  But this year we made an effort to have a nice datenight to a restaurant that we have been wanting to try for a long time.  A lot has happened in 9 years and it is nice to slow down every now and then and reflect on how blessed we have been.  It was a sweet night and I am thankful for the opportunity to get to love and be loved by this man.

Caroline was already asleep but the big kids wanted to join us in a picture before we took off for the night.  One afternoon the week of our anniversary I showed the kids the highlight reel from our wedding video.  Ainsley talks about weddings a lot and she was almost stunned watching it all.  She kept saying things like 'wow mommy you look so pretty in your white wedding dress' and 'oh I love your hair. It looks so pretty.'  And then she got quiet and it was like she couldn't put it into words but she kept saying 'you just look so different.'  I probed a bit asking if it was because of my dress or my makeup or my hair and she said no to all of that but just kept saying 'you look so different and so pretty.'  Come to find out that the reason I looked so different to her was because I looked so much younger.  Arg!  Gee, thanks for pointing that one out Ainsley!

A funny  picture taken by the kids.  Even though it is blurry, I still like it because it shows we were having fun.

The Saturday before Christmas Ainsley and I went to go see the Nutcracker.  She was super excited and I'll admit that I was too.  The night before, we opened presents from Papa and Yaya and Ainsley was given this nutcracker ballerina doll.  She was thrilled and was so excited to get to bring her to the ballet with us.  This day, Ainsley was still recovering from strep throat and I was feeling a bit sick (the next day I was sent to the hospital with the flu!) but at the time it was just a sweet afternoon with my big girl!

Here are a few other fun memories.  My gorgeous, curious baby with the Christmas tree.

Bailey's self-decorated tree that was in his room.  Notice the fighter jet, the wire hanger, the fishing pole bath toy, the spiderman toy turned ornament, and the mardi gras beads.  He was very proud.

My cute boy and his yummy snowman treat.

This girl and her daddy.

Bailey at his class Christmas party.  Sadly Ainsley had to miss her party because she was sick.  Bailey got to go and then got sick a few days later.  Sigh.  This was the Christmas of illness.  Anyway, here he is being goofy at this class party.

Here he is with his adorable teacher Mrs. Fulmer.  She is the best and he adores her but was grumpy at this moment because he didn't get a balloon.  Sigh... there is just no winning some days.

Ending on a sweet note with this cutie.  Happy December!

Caroline's 1st Birthday

December 17th 2014, Miss Caroline Elizabeth Peyton turned one!  Here are a few pictures of our precious baby from that day.  Since the big kids were at school, her and I had a quiet morning to play just the two of us after her morning nap.

She is so happy and lovable and squishy and round (compared to the long and bony big kids) and I just love her to pieces.  Clearly we are extremely bias but George and I comment all the time about how beautiful we think she is.  And her blue eyes are just stunning!  She will definitely be a heartbreaker one day.

Then that evening we did her gifts.  I'll admit that she only really had one gift with a few accessories from us but thankfully the grandparents and great grandparents chipped in to add a few more packages to the mix.

Right away she went for the big tall present and tried to eat it.  This was the gift from us and it was a Little People Disney Princess Castle.  It made me laugh when I got this for her because even before she was born, I knew I wanted to give this to her for her first birthday.  I just think it is so cute and each of the princesses introduce themselves and play music from their movies when you put them in the castle.  The funny part is that when Ainsley was this age, I really tried to keep all our toys fairly gender neutral - I didn't want to push a lot of princess stuff - and I didn't really like character toys that were related to any type of movie or show and I tried to stay away from plastics.  Ha!  My how things have changed!!!  After seeing how much Ainsley loves all the princess characters and watching all the creativity and imaginative play that comes from recognizing them and reenacting their stories - and realizing that plastic is not the devil - I have come to not only embrace but really love it.  And I was super excited to give our baby girl this castle!

There were several smaller boxes from us as well that had all the princess characters in them.  She doesn't really get the idea of opening presents yet but thankfully big brother and sister were willing helpers.

Then it was back to the castle.  Opening it was hard work!

But she was pretty excited when she realized what it was and that it was hers!

And so were the big kids!  Caroline is still a little young for the toy and so the big kids have spent a lot of time "breaking it in" for her!  Both Ainsley and Bailey have independently spent hours playing with it and they have spent countless afternoons playing with it together.  I knew it was going to be a hit!

Then it was time for cake!  Four layers of strawberry cake for our one year old!

While we got some pretty decent pictures, they don't really do the night justice.  Ainsley was sick with a fever and so we were trying to keep her away from the two little kids and away from Caroline's toys because Caroline just puts everything in her mouth and we really didn't want her to get sick.  This of course hurt Ainsley's feelings and made her feel left out because Bailey was still allowed to be close to everything.  I really wanted the night to be about Caroline but we didn't get to finish opening her presents because of Ainsley's meltdowns.  And then Caroline got scared of her cake and didn't like us singing and so she started to cry.  Sigh.  But we went through the motions and then whisked everyone off to bath and bed.  So here are the two best pics of the three kids... you either have Bailey smiling with solemn faced Caroline... or goofy Bailey and smirking Caroline... take your pick!  All the while George is griping at Ainsley for being too close to Caroline.  Ha!  Sometimes you just have to laugh.

Then came the big scary cake!  Maybe four layers really is too much for a one year old.  Should have known our timid little girl needed something smaller.

But, again, thankfully Ainsley and Bailey could help make it less intimidating but swiping finger licks of the icing.

Still... clearly it is time for bed.  Happy birthday sweet baby girl!

Basketball

Late fall this year Ainsley played basketball with some friends from her school.  They got to pick their own name and although it was a toss up between Rainbow Unicorns and The Elsas, the Rainbow Unicorns ended up winning out.  One of the the team moms got them these adorable rainbow socks to complete the look!  Below is a picture of the group.

The way it works at this level is that the team has a short practice before each game on Saturday morning.  I loved this because it gave Ainsley the exposure without adding a lot of extra commitments to our schedule.  Below is Ainsley and Cassidy, one of her besties, warming up during one of the practices.

Ainsley had a fun season even making a few goals during some of the games.  We got a real basketball hoop at home and George and her had fun practicing an playing together during the week.  Ainsley really had a lot of fun playing even though she would constantly call it soccer and it gave her and George something special to do together and bond over.  For the actual game this week, her team wore these black jerseys.  Here she is about to play.

Her cheering section... although cute as can be, this little one made it impossible for me to get any pictures during the actual game.

Ainsley, Cassidy, and another buddy after a good game!

And here are copies of her 'official' basketball pictures.
